The most important person on the PLANET with respect to reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be Senator Obama or Senator McCain. The U.S. is a close second to China in annual emissions of carbon dioxide. However, on a per capita basis we of course are much worse than China.
So, not only can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions the most, we can lead. Instead we've been acting like Neanderthals.
Our next President can change this (they both say they are going to). www.350.org is an organization dedicated to "make sure everyone knows the target so that our political leaders feel real pressure to act." The target: 350 parts per million (PPM) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We're currently at 387 ppm. Why 350 ppm?
"350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide--measured in 'Parts Per Million' in our atmosphere. 350 PPM--it's the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change."
In order for our next President to convince themselves of the need to take significant action on global warming they will need to spend time on the subject and learn from others.
