In his book A Man Without a Country, Kurt Vonnegut has some choice words about global warming and our addiction to fossil fuels.

Vlog (video blog) by The Resident; check it out.  She shares Vonnegut's thoughts, and her own, on global warming and other topics.  It's direct, refreshing, but also scary -- truth.

Here's an excerpt from A Man Without a Country courtesy of The Resident:

"We are all addicts of fossil fuels in a state of denial.  And like so many addicts about to face cold turkey, our leaders are now committing violent crimes to get what little is left of what we're hooked on."

The truth: to solve the four biggies, non-renewable energy needs to cost more.  The best way to do this is by shifting taxes from income to non-renewable energy.

P.S. - a second Vlog by The Resident -->  Roots.  How to solve major societal problems by getting at their root cause.  Includes three examples....one is global warming.

Neither political party will truly address the fuel problem facing the U.S., or future of the world. The addiction this nation has for fossil fuel will not end anytime soon, unless people voice loudly their opinions and stop "imagining" their political party really cares, especially when they themselves are taking money from the large oil companys for "favors." 35 mpg by 2020? Get off that crack pipe!

Did I just hear a briefcase full of money being opened?

Agreed "Diamond" Joe -- it will take citizens acting on their values and "voting" with their time, dollars, and keyboards via the internet.

One shift we really need to make is for Americans to realize that they should look at themselves and be willing to change behavior and even possibly make some sacrifices. I don't see how we can really make any great shift without a change in thinking. Sort of since WWII people have been in the mindset of "protecting the American way of life", which to me means really getting as much "stuff" as possible. Consumers have to learn to need and want less, otherwise we will continue to be dependent on foreign oil and fossil fuels. I think tax shifting is a great idea, I think having a .5 increase in tax for commuter rail and other forms of alternative transit are also great ideas, lets see who is willing to make that small sacrifice.

        Sally,

Yep, the more Americans are thinking along these lines..... people will lead elected representatives.  Please post solve4biggies.com on other blog discussions to increase readership and sharing of ideas.

I look forward to hearing from people who don't agree with the idea of tax shifting, and learning about ways they think we should solve the 4 biggies.
