Polar Bears, Gifts and Global Warming

In December 2006, the Bush Administration proposed listing the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act - this is a good thing.  Maybe the fact that an animal is clearly being harmed by global warming will lead to action in the United States.

Our son Max just turned eight years old.  Recently there was an article in our local newspaper about kids having their birthday party guests give to charities instead of buying gifts.  One organization specifically mentioned was the Humane Society.  We read the article together and I asked what he thought about the idea - pretty quickly he said, "I'd like to get gifts from my friends."  I noted that he could have the money go to the Humane Society and he paused.  I'm thinking he was picturing some puppies or kittens that would be helped.  We left it at that.

What will it take for us to take action to limit the release of greenhouse gases?  Maybe a "polar bear" type thing.

      Ok here goes...my first blog....
      I am so concerned about the future of our planet. Other people, less responsible contribute to the breakdown of our environment and ruin it for those who make changes. Nevertheless, I try to do my part.I look at my life stlye constantly and make daily decisions on how to make this planet last longer - from little things like not throwing the hotel towels on the floor after one usage to bigger things, such as carpooling into the city and lowering the heat to 58 degrees when we go away.
      Btw, does anyone know a responsible, hybrid SUV out there? I need to get a new car....and of course it will be GREEN!

        Green-girl Jackie,

        You are doing meaningful, specific things that do help.  Cool (so to speak) and setting a great example for your kids (not JUST setting the thermostat         ouch).

        The facts are that most of us in the U.S. don't do a fraction of the things we could do to conserve energy.  Why?  Because we don't have to.  Not only is there very little financial incentive, the media tell us to.....consume, consume.  Implementing a tax shift would increase energy prices providing a larger financial incentive as well as changing the mindset of many regarding energy use.

        For a hybrid SUV.......

          - Ford Escape Hybrid - EPA-estimated ratings: 36 city/31 highway mpg;
          - Mercury Mariner Hybrid - EPA-estimated ratings: 33 city/29 highway mpg;
          - Lexus RX 400h - EPA-estimated ratings: 30 city/28 highway mpg;

        And, Hybrid Sport Utility Reviews

        Let me know what you decide on and how it goes......
